About
"Searching for the Ocean" | At Branku Brančotava
On July 30, we invite you to a special evening with author and former New Riga Theatre actor Matīss Ozols, who in his performance "Searching for the Ocean" shares one of the most significant decisions of his life.
Matīss is known for his roles in the New Riga Theatre productions "Kordēlijas zeme" (Cordelia's Land), "Dubliners on Miera Street", "Women and Men", and "Grey Summer, Sunny Winter", where he played the leading role. But on this evening, he will appear on stage not as a character, but as himself, telling his own story.
"Searching for the Ocean" is an inspiring story about the courage to take risks, make uncomfortable decisions, and step outside your comfort zone in order to overcome a personal crisis.
The performance is based on Matīss Ozols' personal experience. While working as an actor at the New Riga Theatre, he made the life-changing decision to leave behind a stable job, a familiar lifestyle, and financial security in order to travel to New Zealand—the far side of the world—where no one could guarantee success, security, or a clear plan for the future.
This journey became a story not only about New Zealand, but also about choosing to live more boldly. It is about the moment when a person stops waiting for the "right time" and takes a step into the unknown.
Today, when many people feel trapped in routine, this performance serves as a reminder that change is possible. It encourages us to dare to change careers, start a new project, pursue a long-postponed dream, or simply believe in ourselves more than we have before.
Combining personal experience, original music, humor, and moving life adventures, "Searching for the Ocean" creates an experience where the audience not only listens to a story but also discovers a part of themselves within it.

Before the show, the Brančotava bar will be open, and until the performance begins, we will enjoy a special playlist curated by Matīss himself—songs that accompanied him on his journey, inspired him, and remind him of the experiences he lived through.
To bring the evening even closer to Matīss' story, we have prepared a small menu inspired by his time in New Zealand. Each dish has its own place in the story:
Cold beet soup, which Matīss prepared during Christmas in New Zealand.
Fish and chips, one of the meals he enjoyed most often during his travels.
Pavlova, the iconic dessert that New Zealand still considers part of its culinary identity.
We encourage guests to arrive early and enjoy the food, drinks, and atmosphere.
We'll be gathering outdoors on beanbags and on the terrace at tables. Here's hoping for good weather!
